Underlying Strength

Sidney Turner had been trying for years to figure out what he was supposed to be doing.

“I found joy helping people find their own self confidence,” said Turner, owner of Underlying Strength.

During a meeting with a coach it became clear that Turner was destined to continue his path of helping others through personal training and physical fitness.

“Everything I had been doing in the past 10 years was leading me to this point,” he said. “No matter what I had chosen to do I would always be in a gym.”

Turner, who opened his 2,000-square-foot fitness center in January, had previously worked at LA Fitness as a personal trainer for six years. After leaving behind the big gym atmosphere, Turner, who at the time had a handful of clients, began training out of his home.

“I was doing more running around training,” he said of his travels around lower Bucks County.

Now with a home base to house his private and semi-private personal training sessions and hour-long boot camp classes, Turner said he hopes to reach out to more people in the community.

“My goal is to make working out less intimidating for the average person,” he said. “The goal is to bring empowerment to everyone. There’s an intrinsic value to training.”

A certified personal trainer, Turner holds various other certifications, including Olympic weightlifting, orthopedics and suspension training (think TRX). He studied exercise science and is currently pursuing a degree in entrepreneurship from American University online.

His personal mission is to find the untapped potential in his clients. A pair of women who started working out with him a few months ago are pushing themselves further, even deadlifting 150 pounds off the ground, he said.

“They are encouraging each other. They’re praising each other,” Turner said. “They’re becoming the strongest version of themselves.”

Personal attention and individual goal-setting are key at Underlying Strength. A vision board hanging inside the doorway lists each of his clients’ names and unique goals. It’s the personalized approach that sets his facility apart from larger gyms.

“Everyone still has a name. You’re not scanning in with a key card,” Turner said. “If you’re not here, you’re going to be missed.”

Like any good coach, Turner holds his clients accountable, checking progress through monthly assessments, as well as in-depth body assessments to track muscle mass. He offers meal planning and nutrition counseling as part of his personal training services.

Weight loss is not the focus. Instead, Turner said he concentrates on competence building.

“We all have this will and strength in us,” Turner said. “It’s my goal to bring the beast, that warrior, out of people. It’s there.”
