Foot Bridge, Fishing Pier Projects to Conclude by mid-November

A long-awaited pedestrian foot bridge and fishing pier will be installed by mid-November, thanks in large part to the persistence of the Falls Township Supervisors.

ABC Construction is expected to complete the Vermilion Hills pedestrian bridge and add a 60-foot-long fishing pier at Falls Township Community Park by mid-November.

“I’m glad we’re getting it done,” Supervisor Brian Galloway said of the bridge. “People in Vermilion Hills have been waiting a long time.”

The Vermilion Hills footbridge project and the fishing pier addition are among several projects covered in large part by Bucks County open space funding and a PECO Green Region Grant. In all, the grants for the Vermilion Hills project; fishing pier; and community garden expansion are expected to total $234,000 of the projected $312,000 cost for all three projects, meaning that the Township would only need to fund 25 percent of the total cost.

The township can finish all of the projects while remaining within its budget. Bids for the bridge and fishing pier came in significantly higher than expected and were rebid. When the second bid generated similar too-costly quotes, the township’s professionals were permitted to contract directly with a company to undertake the projects.

Falls lucked out in its ability to use the county’s open space funding to carry out improvements to structures – something that Chairman Bob Harvie said is typically not permitted.

“Nobody else was building any projects,” he said.
