Falls to Add Lights, Cameras to Quaker Penn Park

With any luck, lights and a half dozen cameras will be installed throughout Quaker Penn Park this spring.

The Falls Township Board of Supervisors on Tuesday voted unanimously to reject all bids received and awarded previously and authorize a rebid of the project.

For the new round of bids, the electrical and camera installation projects will be put out to bid separately. Bundling the two services together posed problems in the last round of bids, officials said.

In addition to lights, the board intends to have five or six cameras installed at the park’s entrance, as well as locations throughout the park.

The improvements are aimed at making the go-to place to launch a boat also a fun site for picnicking, parties under the pavilions, as well as fun on the playground. The added security features will hopefully make guests feel safer – and prevent inappropriate park behavior, officials said.

Public Works Director Jason Lawson said the improvements coincide with the upgrades carried out at Quaker Penn last year, including riverfront cleanup, which involved the removal of dead trees to provide for a better view. In addition, a new playground and swings were installed, as well as picnic tables placed closer to the river and three compost toilet facilities.

“We’re hoping the public will use it more,” Lawson said of the park, which had been primarily used for its boat ramp. “Hopefully Quaker Penn will become the next community park.”

Public Works employees recently installed the underground electrical conduit and light pole bases.

A bonus is that the bulk of the park improvements are covered by a grant. Seventy-five percent of the total $237,180 project costs are funded by a Bucks County open space grant. Falls Township would pay 25 percent of the projected cost, or $59,295.
