Hockey enthusiasts will have to wait a bit longer before skating on an entirely restored rink at Falls Township Community Park later this year.

During Monday’s virtual Supervisors meeting, the board was expected to award a bid for upgrades to the hockey rink at Falls Township Community Park. However, the township received only one bid and the amount exceeded the budget, according to Township Engineer Joe Jones. The Supervisors, in an effort to remain fiscally responsible, rejected all bids and authorized Jones to readvertise the project with a modified scope of work.

With any luck, most of the costs will be covered by a state grant.

The Falls Township Board of Supervisors last year submitted a Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program grant from the Commonwealth Financing Authority. Parks and Recreation Director Brian Andrews said the township anticipates hearing soon if the grant has been approved.

Upgrades are aimed at improving the look and function of the roller hockey rink by resurfacing the rink, replacing the dasher board, restoring the fencing, painting, and marking the surface, and sealing cracks.

In other business, the Supervisors authorized advertisement for its 2021 road program, which calls for the full-depth reconstruction of Elderberry Drive. Bids will be opened on May 13, with construction anticipated to begin around June 15.
